Energy and the environment. Study guide for middle school
Workshop was organized by Friends of the Baltic NGO within SPARE project and 10th all-Russian seminar “Environmental education for sustainable development – contribution to the future” held by St.Petersburg Academy for post-graduate pedagogical education with cooperation of Committee for Education, Committee for nature use and environmental protection, Committee of State Duma on environment, Commission foe environment of St.Petersburg legistlative assembly, and many other educational, business, NGO and other organizations.
Energy Saving Day -2015 was a big event for schools, families and entire neighborhoods of the Central Federal District of Russia. This year’s event recorded a great success with many practical projects, special events and educational programs that covered more than 200 schools in 7 provinces of the region. It has exceptionally been an engaging one for students, teachers and parents as through their efforts and the use of simple and innovative materials like processing metal and paper many residential and school areas were insulated and this strategy has helped to save energy and water resources.
Ivan Zaitsev, a pupil of a rural grammar school in the Bryansk region won the first place in the 2014-2015 biennium edition of the All-Russian competition. The project was themed relevant and energy efficiency and Ivan’s project of “Household foil and self-adhesive mirror film - energy-efficient assistants for growing seedlings” won the first place. As one of the winners, Ivan Zaitsev, became a member of the International Summer School in June 2015.
19th November, Kaliningrad Center for Environment and Tourism (www.ecocentr39.ru) jointly with Regional Union of Waste Management (www.rspoko.ru) organized the regional seminar “Sustainable Waste Management for Climate and Resources Conservation” dedicated to selective garbage collection. Recycling, reduce of ecological footprint, consumption decrease – there are ways to save the planet's resources and prevent climate changes. The theme of waste and consumption is also considered within the project SPARE as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy development.
Residents of Moscow Region have participated in the Day of energy conservation since 2008 and SPARE-schools have been the most active participants. SPARE program proposed the creation of the themed Day (Day of energy) in 2008. In 2015, more than 75% of the districts of the Moscow region participated in thematic skype conferences and have contributed to the development of Internet resources on the topic "Energy". The 2015 Day of Energy took another dimension as we had most striking of shared lessons on energy conservation, resource conservation, and practical cases which all took place in Pushkin and Lyubertsy district, Khimki and Zhukovsky towns.
Each year the International Day of energy conservation, the proposed program SPARE in 2008, is becoming more popular in all educational institutions in Moscow. Kindergartens, Schools, Colleges, Universities celebrate this day of good deeds. Each institution's own website publishes information and photos about the actions, the lessons on energy conservation, business games, and practical activities in their institution. The main objective of the new thematic festival is to promote among Muscovites methods of rational use of resources and promote the development of renewable energy sources.
All-Russian campaign RSEU "Energy efficiency - the greatest power of Russia" was successfully launched in September 2013. It has been more than two years of partnership on education and media campaign, with public organizations, utilities, enterprises and scientists of the Central Federal District (CFD) of Russia and the Moscow region. In the fall of 2015, polls and analysis of questionnaires and essays showed that adults and school children, campaigners welcomed the findings and allowed for further activities.
SPARE project presented at the round table "Promotion of energy efficiency in budgetary institutions and housing fund" within the VII international specialized exhibition "Energy saving and efficiency. Innovation technologies" held on 7 October 2015 in St. Petersburg.
School students, teachers and officials in the Bryansk region got acquainted with the new SPARE handbook. The approbation took place in schools, extracurricular institutions, among specialists in teaching methods of educational institutions. The person who organized and helped to carry out this activity is Marina Shelkunova – a teacher of English of the Gymnasium No. 1, a diploma winner of-All-Russian SPARE project competition in 2014. The approbation had the next stages: the translation of the handbook into Russian, group reading and discussions, the organization of open classes, making up of questionnaires. The participants noted novelty, relevance, globalism of the brought-up questions and their solutions. Interesting photos, schedules, drawings and mathematical calculations make the text emotional and imparts it a scientific character.
11-12 of February Kaliningrad hosted the dedicated exhibition “Energy Resources. Industrial Equipment” – 2016” in Baltic-Ekspo. Kaliningrad Center for Environment jointly with School of the Future participate and present materials of SPARE educational project over last three years.
In March 2016 members of Bryansk NGO "Viola" prepared and carried out announcement of the All-Russian days of actions for climate protection within the international SPARE project. New Program " Climate Ambassadors" was presented to ecologists, members of non-governmental organizations, teachers, students within three days. Actions took place on the basis of educational institutions. Participants got advice on holding actions. Winners of SPARE competitions told about their experience. The new Program arouse a great interest.
On 8th of April “Friends of the Baltic” held “Climate ambassadors” training which was dedicated to the start of all-Russia program – Climate action days. Teachers and volunteers interested in the climate issues received updated information about the impact of climate change on our city and residents. And most importantly received the solutions that could lower our impact on climate and environment. From April 22nd they will hold lessons and lectures in schools and universities according to the materials of the project and in the frameworks of Climate action Days.
This Earth Day, April 22, 2016, marks the beginning of the Week of Action to protect the Climate, a Climate Ambassadors campaign, created by the Russian Social Ecological Union’s Climate Secretariat, the SPARE program, and Friends of the Baltic NGO.
Kaliningrad hosted 2-days Ecological Forum “Green Solutions for North-western Russia” occurred 13-14 of April in the Center for Environment and Tourism. Forum was supported by Norwegian Society for Nature Conservation (Norges Naturvernvorbundet) and co-organized by Russian Social-Ecological Union (RSEU) jointly with public environmental organizations “Friends of the Baltic” (Saint-Petersburg), “Viola” (Bryansk) and “Aetas” (Arkhangelsk). A total of more than 100 participants took part in events of both Forum days.
Moscow teachers got acquainted with the new program "Climate Ambassadors" at a meeting of the Association of Environmental Educators of Moscow. Schools have received information materials in the thematic mailing lists. Members of SPARE school projects made up the volunteers available and scientists were invited to the "climate messengers"program to become partners in the Program coordinated by The Phenological of Russian Geographical Society.
More than 6 regions , 12 districts and cities, several universities and colleges, 35 schools, 600 kindergartens, schoolchildren and students took part in the All-Russian days of actions of "Climate Ambassadors" in Central Federal District of Russia.
On 17-19th of May Environmental organization "Friends of the Baltic" and Energy efficiency Center of St. Petersburg held a series of media presentations and interactive lessons on energy efficiency for students and teachers, using SPARE materials at the Russian International Energy Forum (RIEF). Students learned what energy audit is, why we should insulate our apartments and save planet's resources, how to use energy efficiently, without reducing the comfort of life.

The methodical seminars, practical trainings, brain storms, art-actions and some other actions in more than 60 schools of the Bryansk, Smolensk, Kaluga, Oryol, Yaroslavl and Tver regions helped to warm schools, houses, and flats. The motto of Energy Saving Day this year: "Effective and economical use of heat".
Regional and national SPARE coordinators developed some new information materials for children and teenagers of 3-17 years old for the Energy Saving Day – 2016 and distributed them to all kindergartens, schools, centers of additional training . More than 50 educational institutions in Moscow and the Moscow region became participants of various actions and practical actions in November, 2016.
